Eagles drop final two games at Finlandia

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Edgewood College softball team dropped their final two games of the Finlandia Dome Classic against host Finlandia University, 10-2, and against Carroll University, 4-0, on Saturday.

Against Finlandia, a pair of freshmen in third baseman/center fielder Elizabeth Soter and second basemen Karly Vigani each added an RBI single in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively, for the Eagles' (0-4) first runs of the season. It wasn't enough against a Lion (2-1) team that utilized a five-run third inning, highlighted by Emily Nguyen's three-run triple, en route to a 10-2 victory in five innings.

Vigani finished 2-for-2 out of the leadoff spot and also earned a walk in the best game of her career thus far. On the mound, junior Shannon Whitmus (0-3) allowed five runs (three earned) and struck out two in 2.2 innings.

Nguyen led the Lions out of the cleanup spot after going 2-for-3 at the plate with a game-high five RBI. Finlandia starter Kassandra Avila (2-0) remained undefeated and surrendered two earned runs, six hits, and struck out six through five innings of work.

It was tough sledding for the Eagle offense in game two against Carroll starter Hannah Miller (1-0) and her 12-strikeout complete game performance. The Eagles mustered just two hits against Miller with first baseman Jordan Anderson and third baseman Elizabeth Soter each registering singles.

Whitmus pitched in her fourth game and held the undefeated Pioneers (3-0) to only one run through the first four innings. The Verona, Wis. native scattered eight hits from eight Pioneer hitters and allowed four earned runs through six innings of work.

The Eagle defense backed up Whitmus with their first error-less game of the season and helped strand nine Pioneer baserunners on the game.

Next up for the Eagles is their 10-game spring break trip to Florida from March 10-14.
