Staver scores 24, Eagles shut down Cougars in rare OT win

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – After heading into overtime for the third time in the last five games, the Edgewood College men's basketball team rode Sy Staver's career-high 24 points in their first overtime win since 2015, 85-77, over Concordia Chicago on Saturday afternoon.

Staver, who knocked down five straight free throws and a layup in the extra period, also drilled a season-high three 3-pointers in helping lead the Eagles (3-6, 3-3 NACC) to a season-best 10 3-point makes. Travis Kell added 19 points and 11 rebounds in his third-straight double-double, Emil Radisevic scored 13 points with 13 boards, and Jake Negus posted 13 points with four 3-pointers.

Playing against the NACC's highest scoring offense, the Eagle defense limited Concordia Chicago (1-7, 0-5 NACC) to a season-low 77 points, eight free throw attempts and five three-point makes.

After getting fouled, Radisevic converted his first free throw to tie it up at 71 with six seconds to go in regulation. The Cougars raced up the floor after Radisevic missed his second free throw, but turned it over with a second to go. The Eagles weren't able to get a shot off as the clock expired.

Led by Staver, it was all Eagles in the overtime period. Both sides hit a jumper to keep it tied at 73. Staver hit four free throws and a layup as part of a 10-0 run as the Eagles went up 83-73 and essentially put the game away with 23 seconds remaining. It was the first overtime win since Valentine's Day in 2015 and ended a 3-game overtime skid for the Eagles.

Staver shot 7 of 13 from the floor and went 7-for-9 at the free throw line in a career performance.

Trailing for most of the first half, the Eagles turned it around with a 12-2 run to go into halftime with a 36-32 lead. The Eagles led for a majority of the second half until the Cougars battled to an overtime period after tying it with under seven minutes remaining.

Mitch Pelissier, one of the NACC's top scorers, finished with 25 points on 10 of 23 shooting and teammate Jonathan Wilson added 22 points.

The Eagles host UW-Stevens Point in their final home matchup of 2017 next Thursday, Dec. 21 at 8:00 p.m.
