WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Edgewood College women's basketball team tried to play catch-up to Carroll University the entire night. But every time the Eagles got close, the Pioneers pulled away eventually taking a 70-57 victory. Delaney Wilhelm had 16 points for the Eagles who suffered their third straight defeat.
Edgewood College (2-3) looked unstoppable in the first two minutes, scoring three easy layups by Diamond Pikulyk, Abby Shane and Allison Gordon for a 6-2 lead. Carroll University (1-4) came back to take the lead, but Brooke Lonigro nailed a three-pointer with 37 seconds left in the first quarter to tie the game at 17-17.
In the second period, after the Pioneers regained the lead, Wilhelm scored five straight points to get the Eagles back to 25-24. Pikulyk scored another bucket to keep the Eagles within one, but they wouldn't regain the lead. Jennifer Freeman scored the Eagles' last five points of the second period, but Edgewood College trailed 36-33 at halftime.
Carroll University opened the second half with a 10-0 run, but Edgewood College answered with an 11-0 run of their own. Pikulyk highlighted the run with a three-point play, and Gordon cut the margin to two at 46-44. However, the Pioneers finished the quarter with an 8-2 run, and started the fourth with a 9-0 run to put the game out of reach.
Wilhelm finished with 16 points, including a pair of three-pointers and three steals. Gordon was 5-for-8 from the floor for 12 points and also had three steals. Lonigro had nine points and four assists, while Pikulyk led the Eagles with 10 rebounds. Edgewood College shot 34.9 percent from the field and committed 21 turnovers.
Carroll University received a game-high 20 points from Katie Rossetti, and another 14 points from Brittney Wald.
Edgewood College returns to NACC play on Saturday against Concordia University Wisconsin. The Eagles and Falcons tip off in Mequon at 4:15 p.m.
