MEQUON, Wis. – Despite a competitive first quarter that saw Jennifer Freeman drop in a buzzer beating floater, the Edgewood College women's basketball team were outscored 27-8 in the second period and couldn't recover in a 78-57 defeat at Concordia Wisconsin on Saturday afternoon.
Abby Shane posted a team-high 14 points and Brook Lonigro added 10 points and five assists for an Eagle team that was held to 33.3 percent shooting and fell cold in a tough-shooting second quarter.
Freeman floated home two of her four points to close out a strong first quarter that saw the Eagles (2-4, 0-2 NACC) trail the Falcons (3-2, 2-0 NACC), 22-16, after the first quarter. That's when the Falcons, the NACC's defending regular season champions, rattled off a 19-4 run to open up a 41-20 lead. It was tough sledding for Edgewood College's offense as they shot 2-for-12 with eight turnovers over that nearly eight-minute span en route to a 49-24 halftime deficit.
The Falcons were outscored by the Eagles in the second half, but led by as many as 26 points in the fourth quarter to close out their 14th straight victory over the Eagles. A pair of All-NACC selections led the Falcons with Audrey Scharmer leading the team with 18 points and 10 rebounds and Brianna Wagner adding 13 points. They took advantage of a season-high 28 fouls by the Eagles and converted 20 of 32 free throw attempts to offset an offense that shot under 40 percent.
Delaney Wilhelm pulled down a career-high 12 boards as the Eagles outrebounded the Falcons, 45-42, in defeat. Despite the loss, the much improved Eagles are making progress after losing to the Falcons twice last season by 25 and 41 points, respectively.
