Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Eagles race past Mount Mary thanks to offensive outburst

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Aided by 11 three-pointers, four double-digit scorers, and 11 assists by point guard Brooke Lonigro, the Edgewood College women's basketball team sprinted past Mount Mary, 87-67, in their second straight win to open the season on Saturday afternoon.

A number of highlight performances pushed an offense that was on pace for 100 points through three quarters and the highest scoring output in Coach Huff's 27-game career. The freshmen duo of Abby Shane and Jennifer Freeman led the three-point barrage as the Eagles (2-0) knocked down 11 on the game.

Shane added a team-high 21 points and three 3-pointers while Freeman hit 6 of 8 threes for a season-high 18 points. Freeman's six 3-pointers tied the school record set by five different Eagles, most recently Shae Beckwith in 2010. Allison Gordon led a dominant performance in the paint with 10 points and tied a career-high with 12 rebounds and freshman Diamond Pikulyk posted a 10-point, 12-rebound double-double in her first action as an Eagle.

The fast-paced offense, captained by point guard Brooke Lonigro and her season-high 11 assists, led the winless Blue Angels (0-2), 25-24, after a competitive first quarter. It was all Eagles the rest of the way.

A balanced scoring attack outdid Mount Mary, 49-27, across the second and third quarters and were on pace for triple digits until cold shooting took them out of it in the final period.

Lonigro, the key cog and pass-first leader of the Eagles uptempo offense, has 18 assists, six steals, and just three turnovers in leading the Eagles to an 82.5 point scoring average through the first two games. The McFarland, Wis. native is the first Eagle with double digit assists since Jessica Abel in December 2006.

Becky Onan led the Blue Angels with a game-high 23 points and 12 rebounds, but was limited to an 8-for-22 shooting performance.

The Eagles will put their undefeated record on the line at UW-Oshkosh this Tuesday, November 21 at 7:00 p.m.
