PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Shannon Kaufmann's first goal of the season off a slick assist from Mady Warda in the 14th minute secured the Edgewood College women's soccer team's first conference victory in a 1-0 win at Lakeland on Wednesday night.
After attempting only 19 shots combined over their first three conference matches, the Eagle offense came alive and outshot the Muskies (3-8, 0-5 NACC), 17-4, in a match that was more lopsided than the score suggested. Seven of those 17 shots were on goal, but none were more important than Kaufmann's second career score early on in the first half.
Freshman goalkeeper Grace Wildeboer, who had 29 saves in her previous four matches, preserved the narrow lead with a trio of saves shortly after Kaufmann's score and needed only four saves on the match to help the Eagles (5-6, 1-3 NACC) snap a three-match skid. It would prove to be more than enough as Wildeboer and the defense did not allow the Muskies to attempt one shot in the final half and earned their first shutout in NACC play.
The Eagle offense, led by five shots from Warda, could've had more after posting 12 shots in the second half while finishing the match with a season-high 11 corner kicks.
Next up the Eagles face Concordia Chicago at home this Saturday, October 7 at 6:30 p.m. They have yet to lose to the Cougars in 13 all-time meetings.
