Eagles cap regular season with pair of victories

APPLETON, Wis. – In their final two regular season matches of the season, the Edgewood College volleyball team beat Lawrence, 3-1 (23-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-21), and won another 5-set marathon in 3-2 (25-22, 22-25, 19-25, 25-14,15-10) win over St. Norbert College on Saturday afternoon. With six combined aces, Savannah Koester sets the Eagles single season record with 75 aces.

The Saturday sweep gives the Eagles (17-14) a 5-match win streak to wrap up the regular season. They now await No. 6 seed Wisconsin Lutheran in the first round of the NACC tournament this Tuesday, October 31 at home.

Despite dropping a first set that saw nine ties and eight lead changes, the Eagles bounced back in 3-1 win over Lawrence in match one.

Savannah Koester's 15 kills led four Eagles with 10 or more kills, Haley Schwenn posted 26 assists, and Sarah Uczen corralled 24 of the team's 97 digs as the defense held the Vikings (10-16) to a .060 hitting percentage on the afternoon.

After the Vikings hit .167 to top the Eagles in the first set, Koester and Co. turned the tables on Lawrence in sets two and three and never trailed. Lawrence mustered 10 kills and 16 errors over the key stretch that put the Eagles into the driver's seat going into set four.

All tied up at 19 in the decisive set, the Eagles rolled off three straight points behind an Erika Van Engen kill and a Renee Meister block. Edgewood College took control from there for their ninth straight victory over Lawrence.

The Eagles took down St. Norbert, 3-2, for their fifth, five-set win of the season in a match that featured 26 ties and 16 lead changes. Doherty finished with a team-high 13 kills, Schwenn added 31 assists, and Koester posted four aces for a team that registered 14 aces.

After taking control with a 25-22 set one victory, the Eagles allowed the Green Knights (11-15) to hit a combined .307 over sets two and three to leave themselves a deficit going into the fourth set. That's where the Eagles went back to work and dominated St. Norbert.

A flurry of kills from both Renee Meister and Doherty gave the Eagles a convincing 22-12 lead in the pivotal fourth set. Meister, who also totaled a match-high five blocks, teamed with Cole Jordee to put down a combined three kills to finish off St. Norbert. After playing catch-up early on, the Eagles battled back from a 9-8 deficit in the fifth set to take the 13-9 lead punctuated by two aces by Koester. Tori Wiskow pounded home her seventh kill en route to the win.

Next up the Eagles host No. 6 seed Wisconsin Lutheran in the first round of the NACC tournament on Halloween.
