Staver, second half surge propels Eagles to win

MADISON, Wis. – Sophomore Sy Staver scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half and led an Eagle offense that shot 53.1 percent and hit 13 of 14 free throws in the final period to push past Rockford University, 85-72, on Saturday afternoon.

With the Eagles (3-9, 3-4 NACC) holding a 74-67 lead and nearly a minute-and-a-half to go, Staver sealed the deal with six straight free throw makes in the next 22 seconds to seal the victory. Staver came alive late after either scoring or assisting on 21 of the Eagles' last 27 points of the game, including the go-ahead 3-pointer by sophomore Kyle Geiger that put them up for good at the 6:12 mark.

It was a complete turnaround from a first half that saw the Eagles shoot 33.3 percent from the field en route to a 38-33 deficit at the break. Their ensuing second half surge gave the Eagles their second win in the last three meetings over Rockford.

Staver added a team-high six assists and four rebounds and was one of five Eagles in double figures. Senior Spencer Barnes led the way with 16 points, sophomore Tyler Lemke added 14 points, sophomore Emil Radisevic posted 11 points and nine boards, and Geiger scored 10 points off the bench.

The Eagles came into today's game shooting 67.6 percent from the free throw line, but finished 16-of-18 (88.9 percent) on the game and made 13 in the second half.

Rockford's Tony Diemer, who posted a triple-double in the Regents' last game against Concordia Chicago, led the team with 21 points and 12 boards on 7-of-18 shooting.

The Eagles host Wisconsin Lutheran next Tuesday, January 10 at home against Concordia Wisconsin.
