MADISON, Wis. - Wednesday night's NACC game featured 26 lead changes, but the Edgewood College men's basketball team would have preferred just 25. Wisconsin Lutheran College's Tanner Schieve hit a long three-pointer with 1.6 seconds left to lift the Warriors to a 79-77 victory over the Eagles at the Edgedome. The heartbreaking loss was the sixth in a row for Edgewood College.
Edgewood College (2-9, 2-4 NACC) led 64-57 with just under 12 minutes to play on back-to-back three-point baskets by Kyle Geiger and Spencer Barnes. However, Wisconsin Lutheran College (7-4, 5-2 NACC) would hold Eagles without a field goal for almost six minutes, during a 13-2 run. Adam Freitag ended the drought with a driving layup off an inbounds pass to bring the Eagles within two at 70-68 at the five-minute mark.
The Eagles and Warriors traded the lead eight times in the last five minutes. WLC's Chase Nowak put back his own miss for a 76-75 lead with 2:10 to play. After a pair of empty possessions, the Eagles called timeout with 29.9 seconds to go. As the Eagles attempted to run a play out of the timeout, Eagle sophomore McClain Steffens was fouled, and calmly sank a pair of free throws for a 77-76 Eagles lead with 19.1 seconds left to play.
The Warriors looked to their leading scorer Collin Kennedy for the last shot, but Kennedy's jumper with seven seconds left caught the front of the iron. The scramble for the rebound somehow ended back in Kennedy's hands on the left wing. Kennedy found Schieve about four feet behind the three-point line and Schieve buried the shot for a 79-77 lead with 1.6 seconds to go. Edgewood College set up a final play, but Steffens' inbounds pass was batted down by the Warriors' Grant Beck, and the clock expired.
Barnes scored a season-high 19 points, going 5-for-7 from the three-point line. Freitag finished with 14 points, while Geiger came off the bench for 12. Emil Radisevic led all players with 11 rebounds. Edgewood College shot 49.1 percent for the game and hit 11 three-pointers, but were hampered by 15 turnovers.
Wisconsin Lutheran had a pair of 20-point scorers in Chase Nowak, who had 23 points, including 5-for-6 from the three-point line, and Schieve who finished with 21 points and a game-high seven assists. Kennedy recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Edgewood College has two more games remaining in this three-game home stand. The Eagles will welcome Rockford University on Saturday afternoon, before facing Concordia University Wisconsin next Tuesday at the Edgedome.
