MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College men's basketball team had four players in double figures, but simply couldn't overcome a red-hot Aurora University team. The Spartans made 16 three-pointers, in sending the Eagles to their fourth straight defeat 102-80 at the Edgedome on Saturday evening.
Aurora University (13-6, 11-3 NACC) opened the game on a 14-3 run, with Tyler Lemke providing all the Eagles' points. Edgewood College (4-15, 4-10 NACC) eventually found their scoring touch, with McClain Steffens hitting from the field and Arik Anderson converting a tough three-point play in the lane. However, Aurora's Jordan Lagrone came off the bench to hit four three-pointers in a four minute span to keep the Spartans' ahead 35-17. Edgewood College struggled to just 29.4 percent shooting and trailed 54-32 at the half.
Edgewood College kept pace with the Spartans in the second half, but never significantly closed the margin. After a Spencer Barnes three-pointer, Adam Freitag and Sy Staver scored baskets to bring the Eagles to 57-41, but that would be as close as Edgewood College would get for the remainder of the game. The Eagles put together a 14-2 run to close within 78-61 with 7:35 left to play. Spencer Barnes scored eight points in that run, including two three-pointers. The Eagles played the Spartans' even in the second half, with 48 points apiece.
Edgewood College had four players in double figures, led by Barnes with 21 points, including three three-point baskets. Kyle Geiger shot 6-for-9 from the field for a career-high 15 points. Lemke added 12 points, and Adam Freitag chipped in 10 points. Staver had a game-high eight assists, while Jacob Miller led the Eagles with five rebounds. The Eagles shot 53.1 percent in the second half to finish at 40.9 percent for the game.
Aurora University was led by Marcus Meyers who had 23 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Ty Carlson had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. The Spartans shot 54.5 percent for the game, including an impressive 16-for-32 from the three-point line.
Edgewood College will head north on Tuesday for a game at Lakeland University. The Eagles and Muskies will tip off at 7:00 p.m. and the game can be seen at EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com/coverage.
