MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College men's basketball team had an opportunity for a season sweep of a NACC opponent for the second straight game, but a cold shooting night resulted in a 74-58 loss at the hands of MSOE on Thursday. The Eagles had three players in double figures, led by Tyler Lemke, but shot just 36.8 percent for the game.
Edgewood College (4-14, 4-9 NACC) had the best of the action early, as Jim Bridges scored one off a putback, and then again off an assist from Sy Staver for an early 6-2 lead. The Eagles would extend their lead to 8-2 when Kyle Geiger rebounded his own miss for two, and the Eagles held MSOE to just one field goal in the first five minutes.
Although MSOE (8-8, 7-5 NACC) was struggling shooting the ball, they managed to hit three three-pointers to spark a 12-2 run to take the lead. The Eagles closed to within 16-14, but MSOE's Colling Seubert scored eight straight points to extend the Raiders' lead again. The Eagles closed to within five on a Staver jumper but took a 29-21 deficit into halftime.
The Eagles were hanging around for the first five minutes of the second half. Spencer Barnes scored a jumper between a pair of Adam Freitag baskets to keep the Eagles within 38-32, before MSOE made their run. The Raiders went on a 9-0 run before Lemke broke it with a three-point play, but MSOE would soon push their lead back to 16 points at 59-43. Edgewood College would get no closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
Lemke scored 16 points and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds, to lead the Eagles. Freitag went 3-for-4 from the three-point line to finish with 13 points, while Staver had 10 points to go with five assists. Edgewood College shot better in the second half at 43.3 percent, but were undone by a chilly 19 percent (4-for-21) at the three-point line.
MSOE received a monster game from Seubert who scored 21 points and corralled 18 rebounds. He also matched Staver with a game-high five assists. Jason Palesse had 15 points, while Dylan Sommerfeld and Nolan Henton had 10 points each. The Raiders dominated the glass to the tune of a 48-32 rebounding advantage.
Edgewood College will stay home for the next game, a 4:15 NACC contest against Aurora University on Saturday afternoon.
