RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Tyler Lemke scored a career-high 23 points, but the Edgewood College men's basketball team couldn't overcome a 10-point halftime deficit at Dominican University. The Stars held on for a 72-67 victory, and denied the Eagles a second consecutive victory.
Edgewood College (4-12, 4-7 NACC) held Dominican scoreless on their first four possessions to open up a 7-0 lead. The Eagles still held that margin five minutes in after layups by Arik Anderson and Sy Staver. Dominican University (8-8, 6-6 NACC) began to reel in the Eagles, and eventually took the lead for the first time 22-20 on a three-pointer by Kevin Mack with 6:14 to go before halftime. Kyle Geiger would keep the Eagles within two, but Dominican would go on an 11-1 run ended by Tyler Lemke's basket late in the half.
The Stars' lead would be as large as 40-27 early in the second half, but they could not completely shake the Eagles. Lemke would put the Eagles on his back to keep his team in the game. Lemke scored seven of the Eagles' first 10 points, broken up only by a McClain Steffens three-point play. Dominican would push their lead back out to 60-45, but a 13-2 run put the Eagles' within striking distance at 62-58 with 5:29 to play. Steffens hit a three-pointer and Adam Freitag drilled a pair of triples in the run. But that would be as close as the Eagles would get.
Lemke scored 18 of his career-high 23 points in the second half. He went 8-for-14 from the field and also had a team-high eight rebounds. Freitag hit three three-pointers to finish with 15 points, while Steffens matched his career-high with 12 points. Spencer Barnes led the Eagles with five assists. Edgewood College shot 50 percent in the second half to finish at 47.3 percent from the field.
Dominican was led by Josh Mayberry with 16 points, while Tim Robertson had 15 points and 14 rebounds. The Stars shot 45.6 percent, but nailed 10 three-point baskets on 24 attempts.
Edgewood College will have little time to regroup before their next game. The Eagles will stay in Illinois and prepare for a Sunday game against Concordia University Chicago. The game will tip off at 2:00 p.m. in River Forest.
