MADISON, Wis. – Junior Hannah Menzia knocked home senior Haley Gaines high-arcing free kick in the 81st minute as the Edgewood College women's soccer team escaped Webster University, 1-0, in their home opener on Sunday.
The Eagles only attempted four shots all game, all on goal, as Menzia scored on the Eagles (1-1) only attempt of the second half. It came in a second period where the Eagles utilized a defensive gameplan after an offensive, ball-dominant first half.
Goalkeeper senior Sabelle Seabrook (1-1) headlined the defense with a game-high five saves and survived three close calls in the final six minutes, including a shot off the post in the 88th, for her first shutout of the season.
Despite the seemingly limited opportunities for the Eagles, each shot had a chance at the back of the net, especially early on. In the first 20 minutes of action, senior forward Emily Skaer's one-on-one battle with the goalie was stopped in the left corner, freshman forward Taylor Pampuch's header in the box went straight at the Gorloks goalie, and junior Carly Hanko's strike from in close was knocked away.
The Gorloks (0-1), picked as the SLIAC champion in the preseason poll, launched 20 shots with five of those on goal. Most of their on-target attempts were harmless and went straight at an awaiting Seabrook.
It was the Eagles first-ever win against the Gorloks as they improved to 1-2-1 in the all-time series.
The Eagles host UW-Stevens Point in their third game of the season at Breese Stevens Field this Wednesday, September 7 at 5:00 p.m.
