Meister named all-tournament at challenge

WAVERLY, Iowa – The Edgewood College women's volleyball team secured one victory at the NACC-IIAC Challenge, in splitting a pair of matches on the second day in Waverly, Iowa. The Eagles opened the day with a tense 3-2 victory over Buena Vista University, but then fell 3-1 to Coe College. Renee Meister was named to the All-Tournament team for her performance this weekend.

Against Buena Vista University (9-8), the Eagles came from one set down twice to force a fifth and final set. In that set, Edgewood College (7-8) used a 7-3 run to forge a 14-10 lead. Meister scored two blocks in that run, teaming with Erika Van Engen for the first and Savannah Koester for the second. The Beavers fought off three match points, before Emily Chaussee ended the match with a kill and a 20-25, 25-20, 21-25, 25-11, 15-13 win.

Chaussee finished with a career-high 18 kills, breaking her previous career-best of 16 kills. She added 16 digs for her seventh double-double of the season. Meister finished with 10 kills and a season-high seven blocks. Elizabeth Evans and Jenna Dammen added nine kills apiece, with Evans matching Chaussee for game-high honors with 16 digs. Haley Schwenn dished out 29 assists, her second highest total of the season.

In the second match of the day, the Eagles dropped the first set to Coe College (9-7) but bounced back for a 25-20 win in the second set. Edgewood College trailed 17-16 in the second set before embarking on a 7-0 run to seize control. Van Engen had two kills and Chaussee scores two service aces during the run. However, the Kohawks recovered to claim a 25-21, 20-25, 25-17, 25-19 victory over the Eagles.

Koester ended the match with 11 kills and a team-high .364 attack percentage. Evans had a double-double with 10 kills and a team-high 13 digs. Van Engen matched her season-high with eight kills. Alex Zapuchlak dished out 19 assists and a team-best three aces. Schwenn also had 19 assists.

Edgewood College now heads into a key NACC match on Wednesday night. The Eagles will travel to Dominican University in a rematch of last season's NACC Tournament championship match. Wednesday's clash begins at 7:30 p.m.
