OREGON, Wis. – The Edgewood College men's soccer team fell short, 4-2, against Benedictine, also the Eagles, despite two late goals by junior Henry Simon and a rare own goal on Saturday afternoon.
Looking to snap a four-game skid, Simon knocked home his third goal of the season off a well-played Luke Miller corner kick in the 77th to cut the Benedictine (5-3-1, 1-0 NACC) lead to 3-1. Benedictine countered in the 83rd, but in a rare instance, headed the ball into their own goal to keep Edgewood College (3-6, 0-3 NACC) in it.
Just four minutes later, Benedictine put the game away behind Erik Stammer's second goal of the day. The Eagles of Edgewood trailed just 1-0 at the break, but gave in to a Benedictine attack that outshot them, 12-3, in shot on goal. A strong first-half team, the Eagles have allowed 17 second-half goals against just seven in the first period during their five-game skid.
Goalkeeper Ethan Schneider (3-6) registered eight saves and had to face two penalty kicks, both converted, due to fouls in the box. In the battle of the Eagles, Edgewood College still leads the all-time series, 11-6.
Next up the Eagles face Rockford University at the friendly confines of Breese Stevens Field this Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
