VERONA, Wis. – Goals by sophomore Mady Warda, freshman Lauren Clark, and senior Stevie Grable propelled the Edgewood College women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Cornell College in their first-ever matchup on Wednesday night.
It was another close call after the Rams (2-5) cut the Eagle lead to 3-2 in the 67th minute. Just seven minutes earlier, Grables' score off Alisha Nolden's impressive, falling-down assist proved to be the game winner as the Eagles (5-2) won their second-straight game and had their ninth-straight match decided by one goal.
Goalkeeper Hannah Anderson (1-0) saw her first action of the season and earned the win after playing the entire first half for the Eagles. Senior Sabelle Seabrook relieved the sophomore in the final period and collected one save.
The Eagles never trailed in a contest that got off to a slow start until Warda's goal in the 26th minute, followed closely by Cornell's Deidre Franzen barely a minute later. Franzen, who has scored 10 of the Rams' 13 goals this season, was held to just two shots (both on goal), but proved to be the difference maker after also assisting on Cornell's final goal.
With two minutes to go in the first half, Clark notched the first goal of her career to put the Eagles up for good with an unassisted score after some skillful dribbling in the middle of the 18-yard box.
The Eagles outshot Cornell, 12-7, and held the Rams to one shot in the first half.
Next up is a conference bout with Bendictine this Saturday, September 24 at 11:00 a.m. in a home match at Oregon high school in Oregon, Wis.
