NAPERVILLE, Ill. – A 49th minute goal took down the Edgewood College women's soccer team in their season opener, 1-0, against North Central (Ill.) in a game that featured just 14 combined shots.
Both teams mustered seven shots each with Eagle sophomore Mady Warda registering a team-high three for the Eagles and last season's leading goal scorer, senior forward Emily Skaer, launching two. It wasn't enough to overcome the first goal of the season, for either side, by the Cardinals' (1-0) Taylor Markanich, who attempted a game-high five shots.
The Eagles (0-1) were led defensively by starting goalkeeper Sabelle Seabrook's three saves. Seabrook (0-1) gave Edgewood a chance after denying three corner kicks in the final nine minutes, but her offense only generated one shot in that same duration.
It was only the Eagles fifth, one-goal loss in regulation since 2011.
Edgewood College will host Webster University (Ill.) this Sunday, September 4 in their home opener at Breese Stevens Field.
