Falcons' pitching stifles Eagles' bats

MEQUON, Wis. – The Edgewood College baseball team had high hopes of clinching a playoff berth at Kapco Park on Saturday, but two great pitching performances by Concordia University Wisconsin sent the Eagles home empty-handed. The Falcons swept the Eagles 7-1 and 5-0, leaving the Eagles scoreboard watching to see if they get the breaks they need to make the NACC Tournament.

Edgewood College (14-22, 9-11 NACC) scored their only run of the day in the first inning of game one. Tim Nunn singled with one out and moved to second on Jonathan Roehler's ground out. From there Garrett Bogucki doubled home Nunn and the Eagles had a short-lived 1-0 lead. Concordia University Wisconsin bounced right back with two runs in the first and two more in the third of Eagles starter Blake Bieri. The Eagles wouldn't get another hit until Roehler's two-out bunt single in the sixth. Nik Visone singled in the eighth and advanced to third, but the Eagles couldn't bring him in.

No Eagle had more than one hit, and Bogucki's double was the only extra base hit of the game. Bieri lasted 5.1 innings and struck out three batters. Concordia University Wisconsin starter Andrew Mueller allowed just five hits and allowed just the one run.

The Falcons game two starting pitcher Andrew Heideman, didn't allow any more in game two than his counterpart did in game one. Edgewood College managed only three hits in the game and never advanced a runner past second base. The Falcons scored three runs in the first and two more in the fourth for all scoring they needed. Only two of the Falcons' five runs were earned.

Nunn, Jeff Tucker and Nick Lehner accounted for the Eagles' hits. Nunn extended his streak of reaching base safely to 29 consecutive games, just two short of the Edgewood College school record. Eagles starting pitcher Adam Eck went 3.1 innings, striking out three and allowing two earned runs. Bryce Lashley did a fantastic job pitching the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, giving up one hit and striking out a career-high six batters.

Despite the losses the Eagles benefited from wins by Aurora University over Wisconsin Lutheran College and a win by Marian University over Dominican University to keep their postseason hopes alive. However, Dominican won the second game over Marian to clinch the sixth and final NACC Tournament berth for themselves and eliminate the Eagles.

Edgewood College will close out the regular season with a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday at Stampfl Field against the University of Chicago. The games will also be Breast Cancer Awareness Day to raise money for Breast Cancer Recovery, a local charitable organization that supports women with breast cancer. First pitch will be at 1:00 p.m.
