VERONA, Wis. – It certainly wasn't the end of season script the Edgewood College baseball team wanted to write, but the 2016 campaign came to an end on Sunday at Stampfl Field. The Eagles dropped a pair of games to the University of Chicago 4-0 and 12-1, ending their season at 14-24. A day earlier the Eagles had missed out on a NACC Tournament berth on the last day of league play.
The Edgewood College (14-24) offense, which had struggled in the final week of the season, couldn't flip the switch on Mothers' Day. The Eagles had just four hits in the opening game, and didn't score a run until the final inning of game two. University of Chicago (18-15) game one starter Lucass Friss held the Eagles at bay, throwing a complete game, four-hit shutout while striking out eight batters.
Jonathan Roehler and Jacob Yellovich were the only two Eagles to reach second base, following their base hits. Nate Averill capped off his Edgewood College career by pitching seven innings, allowing three earned runs and left to warm welcome at the dugout from his teammates. AJ Verhage also closed out his career with a strikeout in the seventh.
In the second game, the Maroons posted multiple runs in four different innings to complete the sweep. The Eagles lone offensive highlight came in the seventh inning, when Jake Sawinski connected for his first career hit and first career RBI, scoring Nik Visone from second base. Senior Bridger Berrett pitching four innings and struck out four before exiting.
The day's games marked the end of the careers of eight Edgewood College seniors: Averill, Berrett, Peter Hefty, Andrew Lauritzen, Casey Seelow, Andy Swanson, Verhage and Jacob Yellovich.
