MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Edgewood College pounded out 17 hits in game one of Sunday's doubleheader at MSOE but couldn't come away with the win and fell 3-0 in game two to fall to 14-20 and 6-12 in the NACC on the season.
Edgewood College started game one with five-straight singles and pushed across two runs to open the game. After MSOE pulled within one after a run in the bottom of the first, the Eagles bounced back and again had a big inning by scoring three runs. Jackie Diesch had an RBI double and Sabrina Maicke and Jordan Anderson each had RBI singles to help the Eagles go up 5-1.
MSOE scored another in the second and three in the third off starter Rachel DeJongh to tie things up. Edgewood College didn't let the foot off the gas offensively but couldn't come away with any clutch hits from there on out against MSOE starter Caitlyn Moran. The Eagles had at least one hit in each of the last four innings, including two in the sixth, but failed to pull ahead.
MSOE then finally struck again with a two-run home run off the bat of Rachel Ziemba in the sixth. Grace Delleman led off the seventh with a double and reached third on a sac bunt from Alyssa Hickey but a strikeout and a groundout ended the threat and the game.
Edgewood College's 1-4 hitters went a combined 10-for-17, including three hits from Maicke and Anderson apiece. Hickey also impressed with a 3-for-3 day at the plate with a run and Delleman was 2-for-4. DeJongh struck out four and allowed three earned over three innings while Whitmus allowed two earned over three and was saddled with the loss despite allowing only three hits.
MSOE starter Shannon Curtis was lights out for the Raiders in game two and allowed just one hit while striking out seven. The Raiders scored two in the first and the Eagles didn't record a hit until the fourth, when Kylie Clark had a bunt single.
The Eagles' biggest threat came in the fourth, when Diesch reached on an error to lead off the inning and moved to second after Clark's bunt. Back-to-back fielder's choices meant the Eagles couldn't safely move a runner to third base while a groundout ended the inning. Edgewood College then went down 1-2-3 over their final three trips to the plate.
Maicke and Jordan Anderson each had 11-game hitting streaks come to an end in the nightcap Sunday while Whitmus allowed just seven hits and two earned runs over six innings of work.
The Eagles are off until Thursday, April 28, when they play a doubleheader at Loras College starting at 3 pm from Faber-Clark Field. The game was originally scheduled for April 7 but was postponed due to inclement weather.
