Whitmus walk-off caps wild seventh vs Dominican

VERONA, Wis. – Not too many players can say their first collegiate home run was of the walk-off variety. Even fewer can say they also picked up the complete game victory in the same game. Edgewood College (11-17, 5-9 NACC) sophomore pitcher Shannon Whitmus did just that in the second game of Sunday's home doubleheader against Dominican University (19-9, 9-3 NACC). Whitmus' heroics, along with Grace Delleman's two-run home run earlier in the seventh, helped the Eagles to a 4-3 win while the team lost game one 8-3.

Game two cruised along quickly after Sabrina Maicke homered in the first to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Dominican's Gabi Alfaro hit an inside the parker in the fourth and the Stars added two more in the sixth. The Eagles, who had just two hits since the end of the first, then made a move in the seventh down 3-1.

Jordan Anderson doubled down the left field line to start the comeback. After a groundout that moved Anderson to third, Grace Delleman came up and smacked her second home run in as many days to straight-away center field to tie things up.

Whitmus, who had allowed just two earned runs over seven innings in the circle and had already doubled at the plate, delivered with her round tripper. She took the 1-2 offering from Dominican's Michelle Behrens and blasted it over the left field fence and was greeted by an ecstatic group of teammates at home plate.

Her eight-hit, two earned run effort in the circle moved her to 3-4 on the season. She also struck out five batters. Whitmus and Jordan Anderson were the only Eagles with multiple hits in the nightcap.

In game one, the Eagles couldn't overcome a five-run inning for the visiting Stars in the 8-3 loss. Starter Rachel DeJongh got through the first two innings unscathed but the Stars recorded four hits and also took advantage of an error to put up five runs.

The Eagles responded with three runs the next half inning to make it a ballgame again thanks to Maicke's two-run single and Jordan Anderson's RBI single to left. But that would be all the Eagles offense could muster against Dominican starter Sydney Kuderna, who improved to 9-0 on the year with the victory. Kuderna pitched the next inning and Haley Locher allowed just two hits over the final three innings.

Sydney Cramer was 2-for-3 with a run scored to lead the Eagles while Maicke (2) and Jordan Anderson (1) recorded the only RBIs. DeJongh went 1-for-3 at the plate and allowed five earned but struck out a season-high eight batters.

Edgewood College continues its home stand with a doubleheader against Maranatha Baptist on Tuesday, April 19 at 2 pm.
