Eagles blow by Maranatha at Ceniti

MADISON, Wis. – Edewood College freshman Courtney Leuzinger picked up two wins in the circle and the Eagles offense excelled on a cold and rainy afternoon Tuesday at Ceniti Park. The Eagles (13-17) won both games 10-0 against Maranatha Baptist (4-12) and held the Sabercats to just three hits on the day.

The Eagles didn't waste any time getting on board in the first game after pushing four runs across in the bottom of the first. They scored their first run on an error while Jordan Anderson made it 2-0 on an RBI single to center to score Sabrina Maicke. Shannon Whitmus, who was coming off a walk-off home run on Sunday, then drove in two more on a single up the middle that scored Rachel DeJongh and Anderson.

After a quick run in the third, the Eagles exploded for five more in the fourth to put the Eagles past the eight-run mercy rule. Sydney Cramer recorded the first RBI on a sacrifice bunt and Maicke made it 7-0 after her single through the left side. After a Jordan Anderson sac fly, an RBI double from Leuzinger and a wild pitch that brought in another run, the Eagles had extended their lead to 10-0.

DeJongh finished 2-for-2 with three runs scored while Jordan Anderson and Whitmus each had two RBIs. Leuzinger allowed only one hit in five innings of work. She entered Tuesday with seven strikeouts on the season but fanned nine batters in the first game alone for her first collegiate win.

An RBI groundout from Maicke got the Eagles on board right away in the first in the second game. A wild pitch and a Whitmus RBI groundout to the shortstop gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead after one complete. After a quiet second, the Eagles piled on four more in the third to take control. Leadoff batter Sydney Cramer highlighted the inning with a two-RBI double to the left center gap to make it 7-0.

RBI singles from Whitmus and DeJongh in the fourth, as well as an RBI from Cramer on a walk, pushed the Eagles to a 10-0 lead again in the fourth.

Whitmus pitched the first two innings and struck out five without allowing a hit while Leuzinger notched the win again after allowing just one hit over two innings of work. Jackie Diesch came on in the fifth and allowed one in her first appearance in the circle this season.

The Eagles wrap up an eight-game homestand with a doubleheader against Concordia Wisconsin on Thursday. First pitch against the Falcons will be at 6 pm from Ceniti Park.
