MADISON, Wis. – Edgewood College (10-16, 4-8 NACC) had big hit after big hit Saturday afternoon against Concordia Chicago (16-7, 5-5 NACC) but fell twice to the Cougars at Ceniti Park. The Eagles scored all three of their runs in the first game on home runs and five of their seven runs in game two from the long ball. The Eagles fell in game one 12-3 and threatened in the seventh in game two but came up just short, falling 8-7.
Back-to-back home runs were the story in game one, as Sabrina Maicke hit a two-run bomb to get on the board while Jordan Anderson followed with a blast to center field in the first. Concordia Chicago had scored five in the top of the first, though, and was up 8-3 by the fourth inning.
The Eagles managed three hits after the first inning but couldn't string any together to cut into the deficit. The Eagles were only down a manageable five runs going into the final inning but the Cougars had an RBI single, a sac fly and a two-run home run to put it out of reach.
Jackie Diesch, Maicke and Rachel DeJongh all had two hits in the loss while Karlie Klossner was tagged with the loss after giving up five earned runs over four innings.
All signs pointed to a dramatic ending in game two but Concordia Chicago buckled down in the final frame to come away with the sweep.
Down 8-6 heading to the bottom of the seventh, Edgewood College right fielder Courtney Leuzinger smacked her second base hit of the game with nobody out to bring up the top of the order. Diesch followed with a single to left to put runners on first and second with nobody down.
Concordia Chicago then sent Marita Van Dyke, the winning pitcher from game one, back in for the save. Cramer laid down a sac bunt to third base to move both runners over. Maicke then came to the plate and took a first pitch offering to deep center to score Leuzinger on a sac fly to make it 8-7.
CUC then elected to intentionally walk Jordan Anderson to bring DeJongh to the plate but a deep fly to center field wasn't quite deep enough as the Cougars closed things out.
Grace Delleman's three-run home run in the second and Jordan Anderson's two-run round-tripper in the third highlighted the game for the Eagles. Anderson had three hits to lead the team while Leuzinger was the only other player with multiple hits.
DeJongh struck out seven batters but took the loss after allowing eight earned in the complete game effort.
The Eagles get right back into action on Sunday, April 17 with a doubleheader against Dominican at Ceniti Park. First pitch is slated for 12 pm.
