Eagles wallop Regents on the road

MADISON, Wis. – It was just the kind of outburst the team needed. And it wasn't limited to just the batter's box Wednesday afternoon at Smith Athletic Field. Edgewood College (10-14, 4-6 NACC) scored nine of their 12 runs in the first inning of game one while holding Rockford University to just one hit and followed that up with another dominating performance, the second of which came by a score of 13-1.

The outburst came after scoring just two runs over four games last weekend and it brought the Eagles right back into the NACC playoff race. It all started with an especially hot start on Wednesday, as the Eagles started the game with five-straight singles. First baseman Jordan Anderson knocked in the first run with her single that scored Jackie Diesch while Rachel DeJongh, who was doubling as the starting pitcher, brought around two more with her single to right.

Grace Delleman had a two-RBI single, Sydney Cramer tripled in a run, Diesch had an RBI infield single and Sabrina Maicke topped it off with a two-RBI double down the left field line to cap off an inning in which the Eagles sent 13 batters to the plate.

Delleman had a sacrifice fly to right in the second inning and the Eagles would score two unearned runs in the fifth to take control. DeJongh cruised and didn't allow a hit until the fourth, while Rockford was finally able to push one across in the bottom of the fifth.

Diesch, Maicke, DeJongh and Cramer all had two hits while Delleman led the team in RBIs with three. Diesch scored three times while Kylie Clark, DeJongh and Cramer all had a pair of runs as well. DeJongh improved to 5-8 on the year after striking out three over four innings while Courtney Leuzinger came on in relief and didn't allow a hit.

The Eagles spread out their offensive firepower in game two but still led comfortably after just two innings. A Jordan Anderson RBI triple and a DeJongh RBI single up the middle got the team on the board but the Regents responded right away with a run in the first.

Edgewood College erased all doubt after putting up five in the second and four in the third. Clark's double down the left field line that knocked in Cramer and Delleman highlighted the top of the second while Anderson's two-RBI double to right was the highlight in the third.

Shannon Whitmus pitched the first three innings and surrendered just one hit while Leuzinger returned and tossed the final two innings and gave up a pair of base knocks. Whitmus got the win and improved to 2-4 on the year.

Diesch continued her dominance in the leadoff spot and was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Clark was 2-for-3 with three RBIs while Anderson's 2-for-4 effort was enough for a team-high four RBIs.

The Eagles host Concordia Chicago at noon on Saturday at Ceniti Park in Verona, Wis.
