MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College women's basketball team shot the lights out of the Edgedome in the first quarter against MSOE, but couldn't maintain that clip for the remainder of the contest, falling to the Raiders 58-40 on Wednesday night.
Edgewood College (0-6, 0-3 NACC) shot 66.7 percent (8-for-12) from the field in the opening period of the game. Sidney Peach got the Eagles rolling with a three-pointer on the team's first possession, followed by Cali Twet scoring her first two of nine first quarter points. The Eagles trailed by one when Twet nailed a three-pointer off a pass from Morgan Michaels and Allison Gordon put back her own miss for Edgewood College's largest lead of the game at 19-15.
The Eagles would maintain that lead until almost the midpoint of the second quarter, until MSOE (3-2, 2-2 NACC) took the lead for good with a 10-0 run. However, the Raiders led only 28-24 at halftime after a jumper by Peach and a free throw by MacKenzie Meyers.
In the second half MSOE's top player Holly Denfeld asserted herself, scoring 13 of her game-high 17 points to secure the victory for the Raiders.
Twet led the Eagles with 13 points, including a pair of three-point baskets, as well as a team-high three assists. Gordon notched her first career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Peach added five points, as the Eagles shot 32.7 percent from the field.
After Denfeld's 17 points, MSOE received 14 points from Margaret Pugh and 10 points off the bench by Lizzy Hilby. The Raiders had an impressive 21 assists on 24 made field goals.
Edgewood College heads south on Saturday to face Benedictine University in Lisle, Ill. Tip off from the Rice Center is set for 2:00 p.m.
