DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Junior Marissa Hoyer matched a career-high with 17 points, but the Edgewood College women's basketball team couldn't keep up their fast start in a 75-51 loss to Randolph-Macon (Va.) in the opening game of the Daytona Beach Shootout on Tuesday morning.
The Eagles benefited from the warm, tropical climate early on after shooting over 50 percent in the first quarter en route to a slim 17-14 deficit. Randolph-Macon (4-3), out of Ashland, Va., outscored the Eagles, 14-6, in the second quarter run as they raced to a 31-20 advantage at the break.
Hoyer's layup to start the final half, her first of 13 second-half points, sparked a 9-2 run that cut the Yellow Jacket lead to six points at the 9:12 mark in the third quarter. It was as close as the Eagles (0-8) would come as Randolph-Macon responded with a 6-0 run of their own to open up a double-digit lead they wouldn't relinquish in the first meeting between the two teams.
Three Eagle starters shot 50 percent or better from the field with Hoyer finishing 7-of-14, Sigafus scoring 11 points on 4-for-7 shooting, and MacKenzie Meyers chipping in seven points and matching a game-high three assists on 3-of-6 shooting. Both Meyers and Sigafus pulled down six rebounds each as the Eagles finished at 38.3 percent shooting, including 47.6 percent in the second half.
The Yellow Jackets were led in scoring by 15 points from Marisha Berry and utilized a 31-12 advantage in points off turnovers and a 54-14 edge in bench points to snap a two-game losing streak.
Next up is a matchup with Cabrini University (Pa.) tomorrow, December 21, in Daytona Beach at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
