DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – In a game where both offenses shot less than 33 percent, the Edgewood College women's basketball team nearly came up with their first win of the year, but fell short, 51-41, against Cabrini University (Pa.) in their final game at the Daytona Beach Shootout.
After both teams combined to shoot 14 of 57 (24.6 percent) in a tough first half, the Eagles (0-9) sported a 23-20 advantage thanks to an Allison Gordon layup with 6:21 to go in the third quarter. It was short lived as the Cavaliers (4-6), out of Randor, Pa., finished the quarter on a 15-2 run and led the rest of the way. The Eagles would come no closer than seven points down the stretch and fell short in the lowest combined scoring performance of the year.
Marissa Hoyer scored a game-high 14 points and fell three points shy of matching her career-high of 17 points for the third straight game. The Madison, Wis. native also added seven rebounds while Gordon and Aleigha Sigafus each pulled down a game-high nine boards as the Eagles dropped to 1-1 in the all-time series against Cabrini.
With both teams playing on back-to-back days for the first time this season, Cabrini grinded out the victory behind a 21-8 advantage in points off turnovers and a 14-point, 8-rebound performance from their leading scorer, Renee Oliver.
The Eagles rest up before opening up a four-game set over the course of seven days starting on New Year's Eve on the road against Alverno College at 2:00 p.m.
