Knights defeat Eagles in first road trip

WAVERLY, Iowa – The beginning of the 2016-17 season is proving to be a gauntlet of powerful opponents for the Edgewood College women's basketball team. The Eagles ran into their second straight ranked opponent, falling to 2016 national semifinalist Wartburg College 87-29 on Saturday night.

Edgewood College (0-2) held their own with the 10th-ranked Knights in the first period. Cali Twet and Aleigha Sigafus gave the Eagles their only lead of the game at 4-3 within the first four minutes. After Wartburg College's (2-0) Emma Gerdes hit a three-pointer, Marissa Hoyer tied the game with her first basket of the night. The Knights then took control with an 8-0 run before the three-pointer by Twet ended the streak. The Eagles trailed 16-9 at the end of the first quarter.

Unfortunately, the Eagles defense couldn't hold back the Knights for much longer. Wartburg outscored the Eagles 27-8 in the second period to take a 43-17 lead at the half. The Eagles couldn't gain any ground in the second half, shooting only 21.7 percent after hitting at a 40 percent clip in the first half.

Hoyer was the only Eagle in double figures with 10 points on 5-for-9 shooting. Allison Gordon overcame early foul trouble to finish with eight point. Twet had five points and a team-high four assists. MacKenzie Meyers shared team-high honors with Hoyer with five rebounds.

Wartburg had three players in double figures, led by Gerdes who came off the bench to score 14 points. Aryn jones had 11 points and a game-high six rebounds. The Knights totaled an impressive 26 assists on 34 field goals.

Edgewood College will return to action next Wednesday in a Thanksgiving Eve game at UW-Eau Claire. The Eagles and Blugolds will tipoff at 5:30 p.m.
