MADISON, Wis. – First year head coach Chaia Huff and the Edgewood College women's basketball team fell to No. 14 UW-Oshkosh, 69-28, in both teams' season openers on Tuesday night in the Edgedome.
Led by freshman Cali Twet's 15 points and three assists, the Eagles (0-1) struggled to score early on against a Titan team tabbed as the WIAC favorite. Early in the second half, Twet added back-to-back 3-pointers followed by a long ball by the Eagles' lone senior, Sidney Peach, that breathed some life into an offense that scored 22 of its 28 points in the second half.
Peach's three elicited a loud response from the crowd as she suited up in the black and white for the first time in 710 days due to lingering injuries. The Oregon, Wis. native started and scored three points with one assist and one rebound in 32 minutes of play.
Junior Marissa Hoyer and sophomore Allison Gordon, the only two other returning players, added a combined four points and 11 rebounds. Overall, head coach Chaia Huff used 11 players in her debut in the Edgedome. It kicked off her eighth season as a head coach after spending the previous year at the NAIA's Grace University (Neb.) and six seasons at her alma mater, Division II's Moody Bible Institute (Ill.).
The Titans (1-0) improved to 10-1 against the Eagles all-time and utilized all 17 players in showcasing their deep lineup. Led by 18 points and seven rebounds from All-WIAC player, Eliza Campbell, the Titans pulled down 24 offensive rebounds and scored 38 points in the paint. The Eagles held preseason All-American, guard Taylor Schmidt, to five points on 2 of 5 shooting.
Continuing their rugged schedule to begin the season, the Eagles head to last season's Final Four participant, No. 10 Wartburg, this Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
