MEQUON, Wis. – The Edgewood College women's soccer team battled Concordia University Wisconsin and the stiff winds coming off of Lake Michigan in winning their seventh straight game, and staying undefeated in the NACC. Mady Warda scored the game's only goal and Sabelle Seabrook made it stand up in a 1-0 win over the Falcons.
With the wind to their advantage, the defending NACC champions Concordia University Wisconsin (1-9-1, 1-3-1 NACC), supplied heavy pressure on the Eagles throughout much of the first half. The Falcons totaled six shots, including five on goal in the first 36 minutes, compared to just two shots and only Emily Skaer's effort on goal for the Eagles. Seabrook turned away all five shots to keep the game scoreless.
In the 37th minute, the strong winds might have played a role in the Eagles goal. Warda's shot sailed high into the air, but when it came down Concordia Wisconsin goalkeeper Tabitha Ortiz mishandled the ball and it trickled into the Falcons' net. The Falcons managed one more shot on goal before halftime, but Seabrook again turned it away.
In the second half, with the wind and the lead, Edgewood College (10-2, 6-0 NACC) was content to play possession soccer and control the ball. Warda put another shot on goal in the 70th minute, and Skaer had a header saved by Ortiz in the 77th minute. On the other end of the field, the Falcons couldn't manage another shot on goal against the strong Lake Michigan gusts and the Eagles defense.
The Falcons won the shots column with nine total shots to the Eagles seven. Seabrook's shutout was her sixth of the season to go with her ninth win.
The Eagles victory sets up a major NACC showdown next Wednesday at Breese Stevens Field. Edgewood College will face MSOE (9-3-1, 4-0 NACC) as the only other unbeaten NACC team. Wednesday's winner will certainly have the upper leg toward the NACC regular season championship and the top seed for the NACC Tournament.
