MOUNT VERNON, Iowa. – Going into the break empty-handed, Edgewood College was rewarded with their first-half pressure with a flurry of goals in the second half to propel themselves past Cornell College Wednesday evening. All four of the Eagles' second-half shots found the back of the night, highlighted by Xander Bebber's first two goals of the season.
The Eagles were busy on offense in the first half but couldn't convert, totaling 10 shots compared to seven from the opposition. Steven Canterbury started in net for the Eagles and recorded one save in his 13 minutes of action before giving way to Ethan Schneider. Schneider had three saves in the first half to keep the game scoreless heading into the break.
It only took seven minutes for the floodgates to open for the now 2-2 Edgewood College team. Matt Coplien, a native of Monroe, Wis., scored his first collegiate goal in the 53rd minute on an assist from Luke O'Toole. Xander Bebber, from Baraboo, Wis., then put on a show with two goals in just over a four-minute span to give the Eagles a commanding 3-0 lead.
Bebber's first tally was assisted by freshman Nicholas Bilodeau while Garrett Lee, also a freshman, was there for the helper on the second.
Cornell's Ethan Berube made it a two-goal game in the 68th minute on an assist from Pietro Amado but Lee struck again for Edgewood College by answering with a goal of his own only two minutes later for his third of the year. Tyger Rothering was there for the assist.
Cornell rattled off four shots, one of which hit the post in the 87th minute, after Lee's goal, but Schneider hung on for his first collegiate victory. He finished with five saves.
The Eagles will return to action with another road game on Sunday, Sept. 13 at Luther College. The game from Decorah, Iowa will begin at 4 pm from the Luther College Soccer Fields.
