Slow start haunts Eagles in 2-1 loss to Aurora

AURORA, Ill. – Two goals in the first nine minutes was enough for the Aurora University Spartans to upend the Edgewood College Eagles in both teams' NACC openers Saturday afternoon at Vago Field. Jesse Greenwood scored his first career goal for Edgewood College in the 53rd minute but the Spartans held on for a 2-1 conference victory.

Aurora's Collin Foreman was the first to light up the scoreboard in just the fourth minute after Ben Edith found him for the game's first goal. The Spartans had registered two shots—both off target—prior to Foreman's goal.

Foreman recorded one more shot before Angel Barajas buried Aurora's second goal past Eagles starting goalkeeper Kyle Wood. Justin Farley sent in a cross from the right side before Barajas settled it and fired from about 10 yards out to give the Spartans a two-goal lead.

Henry Simon had the first shot for Edgewood College in the 17th minute but Zach McFarland was there for the save. The Spartans outshot the Eagles 10-5 in the first half before Greenwood made it a game early on in the second.

The junior from Reedsburg, Wis., scored after freshman forward Garrett Lee sent in a through ball and Greenwood tapped it past McFarland in the 53rd minute. The goal was Greenwood's first of the year and it was Lee's third helper of the season.

The Eagles managed two more shots on goal the rest of the way but McFarland stopped both, while Aurora managed five more shots after Greenwod's tally, four of which were on net.

With the loss the Eagles now sit at 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the NACC. They will get back into action on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at home against MSOE. Game time from Breese Stevens Field is set for 7 pm.
