Skaer, Pampuch lift Eagles in season opener

MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College women's soccer team showed some of their mid-season scoring punch in the team's season opener against Beloit College. Emily Skaer scored twice and Taylor Pampuch assisted on three goals as the Eagles claimed a 4-1 victory over the Buccaneers at Breese Stevens Field.

Edgewood College (1-0) wasted little time, getting on the board with their first shot of the game. Pampuch found Skaer in the middle of the penalty area, where the junior forward beat Beloit goalkeeper Emma Schroer for a 1-0 Eagle lead just four minutes into the match. Ten minutes later Stevie Grable put her name into the scoring column with a long shot from the wing over Schroer's head. Hannah Menzia set her up for her first assist of the season.

In the second half Pampuch and Skaer connected again. This time Pampuch left a short pass in the box which Skaer touched to her left, before scoring into the lower right corner. In the 71st minute Pampuch found a wide open Carley Hanko streaking into the area from the right wing. Hanko buried Pampuch's pass for a 4-0 lead with less than 20 minutes to go.

Edgewood College goalkeeper Sabelle Seabrook made four saves and nearly completed the shutout, except for a Beloit College (0-1) goal from Genesis Dade in the 86th minute. Seabrook stopped Dade's first attempt off a cross, but Dade collected the loose rebound end the Eagles' shutout bid.

For Skaer, the two goals marked her first career two-goal match. Taylor Pampuch also notched a career-high with her three assists on the night.

Edgewood College will head into Illinois for a pair of games over the weekend. The Eagles will visit North Park University on Friday, September 4, before a Sunday showdown with 14th-ranked Lake Forest College.
