MADISON, Wis. – On the first night of the Edgewood College men's soccer season, there were plenty of firsts to go around. The Eagles played their first game at Breese Stevens Field in nearly 22 months, freshman Garrett Lee scored the first goal of his career and head coach Derek Helmer earned his first career win at the collegiate level with a 2-1 victory over Beloit College.
Edgewood College (1-0) showed some serious offensive pressure early in the game, forcing four saves out of Beloit starting goalkeeper Jere Bauer in the first 17 minutes of play. It was the freshman Lee who finally broke the deadlock, picking a loose ball in the 35th minute and rifling a shot over Bauer's head for 25 yards away for a 1-0 Eagles lead.
It might have been tied shortly after halftime if not for the heroics of Eagle goalkeeper Kyle Wood. In the 47th minute Wood was called for fouling Beloit's Issac Turner-Wyatt in the penalty area. The Bucs' Jose Gutierrez stepped up to take the penalty kick, but Wood stuffed his shot, diving low to his right to preserve the Eagles lead.
In the 70th minute, the Eagles seemed to have put the game away. A Beloit College defender was whistled for handling the ball in the box. Senior Henry Simon stepped up and calmly buried the PK for a 2-0 lead.
Beloit College (0-1) wouldn't go away quietly, as the Bucs' Daniel Stockton scored on a fortunate deflection of his free kick from just off the top of the box with 3:30 left to play. The Buccaneers hustled to find the equalizer, but the Eagles defense held off the late charge.
The victory was the Eagles' first season opening win since a 3-0 triumph over Lawrence University to begin the 2011 campaign. Edgewood College will travel Friday to face North Park University in Chicago, before crossing the Prairie State for a Sunday date with Knox College.
