MEQUON, Wis. – It was a story eerily similar to last year's NACC Baseball Tournament. For the second straight season, Edgewood College was eliminated on the first day after a 9-4 loss to top seed Concordia University Chicago. The Eagles also lost to both Concordia Wisconsin and Concordia Chicago on the first day of the 2014 NACC Tournament. The Eagles finish their season at 18-24.
Concordia University Chicago (28-13) opened up a 3- lead through three innings before the Eagles broke through in the fourth. Jacob Yellovich grounded out to second to score Zack Creekmore from third base. Creekmore and Brad Clark had opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Carlos Herrera followed with a single to score Clark and cut the Cougars' lead to 3-2.
CUC added two more runs in the fifth inning, but Edgewood College answered again in the seventh. Leadoff hitter Danny Appino ripped a triple down the right field line to set up Pat Manning's RBI groundout. However, Concordia Chicago added another run in the seventh and three more in the eighth, highlighted by Carlos Olavarria's two-run home run. Andrew Lauritzen stroked an RBI single to bring home Appino in the ninth, but there would be no miracle comeback for the Eagles.
Brad Clark finished his career with a 2-for-4 game, giving him five hits on the day. Clark also stole two bases, while Lauritzen and Herrera stole one each. Appino scored two runs to go with his triple. Nate Averill gave a valiant effort on the mound, throwing seven innings, before yielding to both AJ Weedon and AJ Verhage. Averill allowed six earned runs and struck out two Cougars.
Edgewood College has now finished their season in the NACC Tournament for the third time in four years. This final loss brings an end to the careers of seniors Brad Clark, Zack Creekmore and Pat Manning.
