VERONA, Wis. – Katie Landon hit a huge solo home run in the fifth in game one and Sabrina Maicke powered the Eagles with two home runs and five RBIs in game two as part of a sweep over Rockford University Wednesday night. Edgewood College (8-16, 4-6 NACC) won the first game 5-4 and came out on top 9-1 in five innings in the nightcap to extend their winning streak to four games.
The score was knotted at three runs apiece heading into the bottom of the fifth in game one and Landon delivered with a bomb over the left field fence. The round-tripper was the first of the season and third in her collegiate career.
Alexis Unser provided some insurance in the sixth on a sac fly to left field to make it 5-3 Eagles, but the Regents wouldn't go down quietly in the final frame. Lynn Blakely-Snyder, the No. 9 hitter in Rockford's lineup, took a 2-2 offering and belted a long ball to left field to make it a one-run game against Eagles starting pitcher Karlie Klossner.
Klossner, who was one outing removed from the fifth no-hitter in Edgewood College history Monday night, retired the next three batters in order to preserve the complete game win. She allowed four runs—three earned—on five hits while striking out four. Landon wound up going 2-for-3 with two runs while Jackie Diesch and Kayla Updike also finished with a pair of base knocks and an RBI apiece.
It didn't take long for Edgewood College to pull away in game two, as the Eagles led 7-0 after only two innings. Maicke's first home run of the game came right away in the first with two on and an 0-2 count against Regents starting pitcher Brittany Bura.
Landon, Maicke and Updike recorded RBIs in a four-run fourth for the Eagles and by then starting pitcher Rachel DeJongh had found her groove in the circle. She allowed only three hits and one run in her five innings of work.
After Rockford scored one in the fourth, the Eagles responded right back with a pair of runs in the next half inning to make it an eight-run ballgame again. Maicke began the inning with a solo shot on a 1-0 offering from Regents reliever Sarah Moritz and DeJongh helped her own cause with an RBI single three batters later.
With her two home runs in the nightcap, Maicke is now one of eight players in the NACC with at least three home runs on the season. Five players are tied atop the lead with four long balls. She finished game two 3-for-3 with five RBIs and two runs scored. Updike and DeJongh joined Maicke with multiple hits, as each player recorded two.
Edgewood College will play Concordia Chicago next on Saturday, April 11. The doubleheader will begin at noon and will be played at the CUC Softball Field in River Forest, Ill.
