RIVER FOREST, Ill. - Edgewood College struck first in both games of its doubleheader Saturday at Concordia Chicago but was unable to close things out in either game, falling to the Cougars 8-1 in game one and 6-1 in game two. With the losses the Eagles slipped to 8-18 overall and 4-8 in the NACC.
Katie Landon hit her second home run in a three-game span during the first game of the afternoon in the fourth inning, but the Cougars responded right back with a grand slam in the bottom half of the inning to gain control. The Cougars kept going just one inning later with four more runs off of five hits to put the game out of reach.
The Eagles threatened in the top of the fifth with a pair of hits in the inning and added one final hit in the seventh but were unable to push any more runs across. Klossner wound up going 4.2 innings while allowing eight runs—seven earned—on nine hits. Shannon Whitmus came on in relief and pitched the final four outs and allowed a pair of hits and three walks.
Landon was the lone Eagle with more than one hit and her round-tripper was her second of the year. Jackie Diesch, Alyssa Schulting and Rachel DeJongh also had base hits in the game. CUC's Adrianna Cura broke the game open in the fourth with the grand slam and finished 3-for-4.
Alexis Unser provided the Eagles with their only two hits in the nightcap, as CUC's Courtney Pepper flew through Edgewood College's lineup and allowed just one run (unearned) over seven innings.
Unser knocked in the only run of the game for the Eagles in the third after Eagles' leadoff hitter Kylie Clark reached on an error with two outs in the inning. Clark then stole her eighth base of the season before Unser singled up the middle to bring her across.
Rachel DeJongh dropped to 5-8 on the year after allowing the Cougars to score three runs in the fourth and sixth innings. She went 5.1 innings while allowing six runs—all earned—on 12 hits. Klossner came on in relief and recorded the final two outs.
The Eagles will return to action right away on Sunday for a 12 pm doubleheader against Dominican University. The games will be played at Park District of Forest Park in River Forest, Ill.
