VERONA, Wis. – Edgewood College's first NACC win of the 2015 season will be remembered for quite some time. Karlie Klossner pitched her first no-hitter and the first for the Edgewood College program since 2010 in a thrilling 1-0 win over MSOE. The Eagles topped the day off with another shutout win in the nightcap.
Klossner entered the seventh and final frame in game one having faced the minimum and worked a 2-2 count on Raiders' leadoff hitter Gabbi Garcia. Garcia then tapped a slow grounder to Kylie Clark at shortstop but Clark's throw drew Alyssa Schulting off the bag, giving the Raiders their first baserunner of the contest.
Kailey Smith then bunted Garcia over to give the Raiders a runner on second with just one out. Klossner then did what she had done best throughout the first six frames: get ground ball outs. She got Katie Ready to tap one back to the pitcher's circle and then induced a roller to Alexis Unser at second to close out the victory.
For the game, Klossner recorded 16 ground ball outs, three fly outs and two strikeouts. The defense behind her was also top notch. Unser saved the day in the top of the sixth with two outs after diving and snagging a line drive that was sure to make it all the way to the wall for extra bases in the right center gap.
With the win, Klossner improved to 2-8 on the season and dropped her ERA to 4.70. Klossner needed only 78 pitches in the win and becomes the fourth pitcher in Edgewood College history to have thrown a no-no. Claire Blake pitched the most recent back in 2010 while Kristin Borre tossed one in the 2006 season and another one a year later. Denise Gard had the first in program history back in 2002 against Maranatha Baptist.
The Eagles pushed their lone run across in the fourth after Sabrina Maicke reached on an error by the second baseman and Katie Landon scored from second. Landon led off the inning with a single and was the lone Eagles player with multiple hits in game one.
Edgewood College reached the 10-hit mark for the first time in eight games in the second contest and used an impressive outing from Rachel DeJongh to win by a score of 5-0. The Eagles wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard after Sabrina Maicke knocked in Unser with a single in the first. Two innings later, the Eagles pushed three across to grab a 4-0 lead. Kayla Updike had the clutch hit in the inning with a double to right center that drove in two.
DeJongh scattered only five hits in a complete game effort and struck out six while Updike, Maicke and Unser all finished with two hits apiece. Shannon Whitmus added a pinch hit RBI single for an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.
With the win the Eagles now sit at 6-16 overall and 2-6 in the NACC. They will resume play on Wednesday at home against Rockford University. First pitch is slated for 2pm at Ceniti Park.
