SHEBOYGAN, Wis. – The Edgewood College took a giant step closer to the NACC Tournament with a sweep of Lakeland College on Sunday at Wildwood Park. The Eagles received a shutout pitching performance from Andy Swanson in a 6-0 victory in game one, and then completed the sweep 11-3 behind a complete game from Bridger Berrett.
In game one, the middle of the Eagles lineup, specifically Brad Clark and Nick Lehner, pounded Muskie pitching. Clark was 3-for-5 with two runs batted in, while Lehner was 3-for-4. Lehner picked up an RBI in the first when he drove home Zack Creekmore who had reached on an RBI single of his own. Leading 2-0, Callen Gavic plated a run in the fourth with a sacrifice fly.
The Eagles put up three insurance runs in the fifth when Clark drove in Andrew Lauritzen and Pat Manning with an RBI single, and Alex Fowler added another RBI single in a pinch-hit appearance. In addition to Clark and Lehner, Danny Appino also had three hits, including a double.
Really though Edgewood College (16-16, 10-6 NACC) had all the runs they needed behind a lights out eight innings from Swanson. Swanson allowed six hits and struck out five. His only troubled came in the eighth inning when Lakeland College (9-25, 3-12 NACC) loaded the bases with two outs, but Swanson coaxed a ground ball to end the inning.
Lakeland took a 1-0 first inning lead in the second game, but the Eagles scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the second to take the advantage. Lakeland responded with two more runs in the fourth inning, but the Eagles blew the game open in the fifth.
Lauritzen tied the game at 3-3 with a bases loaded single to score Peter Hefty and keep the bases loaded. Creekmore then followed with a huge 3-run double to right field to clear the bases and put Edgewood College ahead 6-3. Lehner followed with an RBI single to bring home Creekmore and the Eagles were in control at 7-3. The Eagles closed out the scoring with a sacrifice fly from Lauritzen in the sixth and an RBI single from Pat Manning and a run on a Muskie error in the seventh.
Berrett was strong in improving his record to 3-2 on the year. He allowed eight hits and no earned runs in his third complete game of the season. Lehner was 2-for-3, while Manning was 2-for-5. Creekmore's three-run double gave him 44 RBIs on the season and extended his school record streak of reaching base to 30 consecutive games. Lauritzen drove in two runs for the Eagles.
Edgewood College can clinch a berth in the NACC Tournament with two wins on Monday against Concordia University Wisconsin, or a win and one more loss by seventh place Rockford University. The Eagles and Falcons will play their NACC doubleheader at 3:00 p.m. at Stampfl Field.
