MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Edgewood College baseball team carried a six-game winning streak into Sunday's doubleheader at Wisconsin Lutheran, but couldn't overcome a pair of big innings by the Warriors. The Eagles gave up seven runs in the eighth inning of game one in an 8-3 loss, and then surrendered seven runs in the seventh inning of game two, to fall 12-5.
Nick Lehner drove in a run in the second inning on ground ball and the Eagles added two more in the fifth inning. Pat Manning drove in Brodie Engel with an RBI single and later scored on a Wisconsin Lutheran College (17-12, 6-8 NACC) dropped fly ball for a 3-0 Eagle lead. The Warriors got one run back in the sixth, but the wheels fell off for Edgewood College (13-15, 8-6 NACC) in the eighth. WLC scored seven runs, three unearned all after two were out.
Brad Clark was the only Eagle with two hits, going 2-for-4 with a double and a stolen base. Andrew Lauritzen had a double in four at-bats. Bridger Berrett pitched 7.1 innings, striking out five batters and allowing just two earned runs. Alex Meister got one out in the eighth inning and ended up with the loss. AJ Weedon closed out the game for the Eagles.
In game two, Edgewood College bounced back from a 1-0 Warrior lead with two runs in the fourth inning. Peter Hefty drove in a run with a single and Danny Appino hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Lehner. Wisconsin Lutheran answered with two runs in the fourth to retake the lead, but the Eagles tied the game in the fifth when Zack Creekmore scored on a throwing error following a Callen Gavic strikeout.
But once again, the big inning bit the Eagles. This time, the Eagles committed two errors while the Warriors scored seven runs on four hits. Edgewood College received and RBI double from Lauritzen and an RBI single from Creekmore in the eighth, but the damage had been done.
Clark and Gavic each had two hits, with Gavic adding a double. Manning and Creekmore each stole two bases. Andy Swanson allowed six earned runs in 6.1 innings while striking out three batters. Blake Bieri and AJ Verhage finished out the game.
Creekmore tied a school record by reaching base safely in 26 straight games. Creekmore joins Travis Krahn (2004) and Shawn Burcum (2006) and has a chance to break the record on Wednesday night against Illinois Tech at Stampfl Field.
