Eagles rout Maranatha twice in Watertown

WATERTOWN, Wis. – Runs were easy to come by for Edgewood College at Brandt Quirk Park late Wednesday afternoon as the Eagles needed only five innings in both games against Maranatha Baptist. The Eagles won 16-2 and 10-1 and improved to 11-21 on the year after the non-conference sweep.

Edgewood College scored four in the first and seven in the second to set the tempo in game one and kept the pedal to the metal with two in the third and three in the fourth. Eagles starting pitcher Katelyn Welsh kept Maranatha off balance by allowing just four hits.

Seven different Eagles had hits in the win and five had at least a pair. Katie Landon was a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs scored while Sabrina Maicke and Karlie Klossner manufactured the most runs by knocking in three runs apiece. Martha Sommers, Jackie Diesch and Megan Hauge all had two RBIs as well. Hauge had a two-RBI double to right center in the third for the game's lone hit that knocked in more than one run.

The Eagles were in control early on again in game two, as they scored three in the first, four in the second and three more in the third. Maranatha scored their lone run in the third after Kelli Fox had an RBI single.

Edgewood College took advantage of Maranatha's errors in the field again in game two. Five of their 10 runs off Maranatha starting pitcher Brooke Campbell were unearned. Kayla Updike got the scoring going for the Eagles with an RBI single to left field in the first.

Hauge had the biggest hit of the doubleheader by ripping a triple that short-hopped the fence in right center while the bases were loaded in the bottom of the second. Rachel DeJongh then singled in Hauge to make it 7-0 Eagles after two.

Hauge then collected her seventh RBI of the day with an RBI single that scored Welsh in the third. Clark and Hauge had three hits apiece in the win and were the only two Edgewood College players with more than one hit.

The Eagles will return to action with a NACC doubleheader on Saturday, April, 18 at Alverno. The games are set to begin at 12:00 pm at the Alverno Athletic Fields in Milwaukee, Wis.
