Eagles sweep Inferno in key NACC matchup

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Eagles are now just one game out of sixth place in the NACC standings after winning two crucial matchups over Alverno College Saturday afternoon. The Eagles scored seven unanswered runs in game one to win 7-4 while the Eagles again had to come back in game two and came out on top 6-2.

The Inferno wasted no time in getting to Eagles starting pitcher Karlie Klossner in game one, although only one of her four runs allowed were earned in her 1.2 innings of work.

It wasn't until the fourth inning when the Eagles finally got their offense churning. Kayla Updike got the scoring started with a sac fly to left and Rachel DeJongh followed with an RBI groundout to the pitcher. Alyssa Schulting then capped the scoring in the inning with an RBI groundout to short.

The Eagles scored four more the next inning after Sabrina Maicke singled up the middle to score Kylie Clark. Updike then pulled through with a bases-clearing double to round out the scoring in the game.

Shannon Whitmus picked up the win after scattering just three hits over her 5.1 innings of relief. She struck out four and walked one.

Katie Landon doubled down the left field line in the first inning of the second game to put the Eagles on the board. Eagles starting pitcher Rachel DeJongh flew through the Inferno lineup the first time but allowed a pair of runs to score in the third after Kristin Holub connected for a two-RBI double. DeJongh then settled in and didn't allow another hit until the seventh inning.

Edgewood College regained the lead in the fifth on another RBI double from Landon and a sac fly from Jackie Diesch. They kept things going in the next inning with an RBI single to right center from Alexis Unser and a single from Maicke that scored two.

DeJongh improved to 6-9 on the year with the victory and allowed two runs—both earned—on five hits. Erin Dulek fell to 8-8 after allowing two runs and recorded just one out in relief of starter Olivia Schneider.

The Eagles are now tied for seventh in the league standings with Lakeland at 7-9. Alverno still has the sixth and final playoff spot with an 8-8 NACC record. Edgewood College will return home Sunday for a 12:00 pm doubleheader against Marian (9-23, 3-13 NACC) at Ceniti Park.
