Eagles and Stars split pair of nail-biters

RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The Eagles scored five in the top of the ninth in game one against Dominican University but fell victim to a walk-off RBI single in game two to split the doubleheader with the Stars on Sunday afternoon.

The Eagles scored one run apiece in the sixth and seventh innings in game one before unleashing for five in the top of the ninth. Eagles starting pitcher Shannon Whitmus led off the ninth with a single up the middle and later came around to score on an error.

Alexis Unser then tripled to center field two batters later to score Kylie Clark, forcing the Stars to call on a reliever. After a Katie Landon walk, Sabrina Maicke knocked in a run on a fielder's choice and Kayla Updike launched an RBI double to left. The Eagles scored their last run of the frame on an error that scored Updike.

The Stars threatened in the bottom half of the inning by scoring two—one earned—off Karlie Klossner, who picked up her fourth win of the year after relieving Whitmus after four innings of work.

Dominican got to Whitmus immediately in the first. An RBI triple off the bat of Marissa Burns got the Stars on the board and Burns would score on a wild pitch one batter later.

The Eagles' bats were silent until the sixth, when Sabrina Maicke knocked in Kylie Clark with a single. One inning later, Alyssa Schulting doubled to left field to score Jackie Diesch to make it 2-2.

Clark led the way for the Eagles offensively with three hits from the leadoff position and added two runs. Maicke was the other Eagles player with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs.

In game two, Burns had a walk-off RBI single up the middle to propel the Stars to the 5-4 win. Klossner relieved DeJongh in the sixth inning and was tagged with the loss. She now has a record of 4-10 on the season.

With the scored knotted at one, the Eagles scored three in the third to take a 4-1 lead. DeJongh had a two-RBI double in the frame that scored Diesch and Updike. The Stars stormed back in the fifth with three of their own to tie things up again.

The Eagles nearly pushed one across in both the sixth and seventh innings after Clark led off the sixth with a triple but couldn't score. In the seventh, DeJongh singled to center but Updike was thrown out at home after attempting to score from second base.

DeJongh was the lone Eagles player with more than one hit after going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. In the circle, she allowed four runs—all earned—on nine hits in five innings. Landon had the other RBI for the Eagles in the game and was 1-for-3.

The Eagles will get back into action on Tuesday with a pair of non-conference games against Loras College. The games will begin at 3 pm from Ceniti Park in Verona, Wis.
