Eagles swept by Benedictine in NACC opener

VERONA, Wis. – Runs were hard to come by for the Edgewood College softball team late Monday afternoon at Ceniti Park, as the Eagles fell 5-0 and 10-1 (6 Inn.) to Benedictine University. With the losses the Eagles are now 4-12 overall and 0-2 in the NACC.

Besides allowing a solo home run in the top of the first, Edgewood College starting pitcher Rachel DeJongh was lights out over the next four innings and kept the Eagles in the ballgame against Benedictine starting pitcher Holly Haberkorn. Benedictine second baseman Chelsea White belted her second long ball of the season off DeJongh right away in the first but DeJongh quickly settled into a groove.

Edgewood College recorded one hit in four of the first five innings but couldn't rally to give DeJongh the lead in the circle. It wasn't until the sixth inning when Benedictine finally put together some offense against the junior from Madison, Wis. Benedictine plated three runs on four hits in the inning. Haberkorn helped her own cause and had the biggest hit of the game for Benedictine by doubling down the left field line to score two.

Benedictine added an insurance run in the seventh and Edgewood College went down 1-2-3 in the bottom half of the inning to drop the first contest. Five different players had hits for Edgewood College, led by Alexis Unser's second double of the season.

Edgewood College had trouble overcoming four errors in the field in the nightcap and allowed Benedictine to put together some big innings late in the game. Benedictine again got off to a hot start by scoring one in the first off starting pitcher Karlie Klossner but again were stymied in the middle innings to leave Edgewood College within striking distance.

Benedictine starting pitcher Melissa Guzior kept the Eagles off balance throughout and scattered five hits over her 4.2 innings of work. Kayla Updike and Alexis Unser finally figured her out in the bottom of the fifth and plated Edgewood College's only run of the day. Updike singled to start the inning and advanced to second after Martha Sommers grounded out unassisted to first base. After a popup for the second out of the inning, Unser delivered with her second double of the day to push Updike across.

By then it was far too late for Edgewood College, as Benedictine scored five in the previous half inning and tacked on two more in the sixth. Klossner was tagged with the loss despite not giving up any earned runs. She scattered five hits and allowed three runs in her four innings. Shannon Whitmus came on in relief and allowed seven runs—six earned—in two innings.

Unser, who was batting leadoff in the second game, finished 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI to lead Edgewood College. Guzior improved to 5-2 on the season and allowed one run on five hits in 4.2 innings of work.

Edgewood College will return to Ceniti Park right away Tuesday for a 2:00 pm doubleheader against Aurora University.
