Game Recap: Softball |

Aurora takes two from Eagles at Ceniti Park

VERONA, Wis. – For the second straight day Edgewood College was swept at home, this time at the hands of Aurora University (11-3, 4-0 NACC). Eagles starting pitcher Rachel DeJongh was again in a pitcher's duel in game one but ultimately lost 3-0, while the Spartans pulled away late in game two and eventually came out on top 11-1.

In a game that only lasted a little more than one hour, DeJongh and Spartans starting pitcher Vanessa Hartzell duked it out and each were flawless through the first three innings. Aurora then collected three of their five hits in the game during the fourth inning.

Logan Cahill led off the inning with a double to left and scored on a sac fly two batters later to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. With two runners on and one out, DeJongh got out of the jam by forcing an infield popup and a lineout to shortstop Kylie Clark to end the inning.

Hartzell kept cruising through the Eagles lineup and entered the final inning with a no hitter still intact and a 3-0 lead. She got Alexis Unser to ground out to the catcher to start the frame but Clark pulled through one batter later with a single up the middle to give Edgewood College their first baserunner of the game. Hartzell then recorded outs against the next two batters to close things out. She needed only 70 pitches and struck out three in the complete game effort. DeJongh ended up going seven innings while allowing three runs—two earned—on five hits. She struck out three and walked one.

The Eagles' bats came alive in the second game and recorded seven hits but their effort in the field proved to be costly again. Edgewood College committed five errors in the field and only four of Karlie Klossner's 11 runs allowed were earned.

The Spartans took advantage of one defensive mishap in the first to grab an early 3-0 lead. After adding one more in the fifth to make it 4-0, Edgewood College finally pushed a run across in the next half inning thanks to a pinch hit RBI single from DeJongh.

Edgewood College committed three more errors over the final two innings to let Aurora bust it open. The Spartans would go on to score three in the sixth and four in the seventh. Sabrina Maicke was the lone Edgewood College player with multiple hits after going 2-for-3, while Clark, Jackie Diesch, Allison Long, DeJongh and Dylan Bahrke also recorded base hits.

The next bit of action for the Eagles will be on Saturday, April 4 for a 12 pm doubleheader against Concordia Wisconsin. The games will take place at the CUW Softball Complex in Mequon, Wis.
