Eagles beat LSSU and fall to UWS in Finlandia

MARQUETTE, Mich. - Jackie Diesch provided the heroics on Day 2 of the Finlandia University Dome Tournament Sunday by belting a two-out, walk-off home run to complete a comeback against Lake Superior State University by a score of 5-4. Edgewood College fell short later in the afternoon, as UW-Superior shut out the Eagles 10-0 in six innings in the second game of the day to wrap up the tournament.

The Eagles used the long ball to score four of their five runs in the final two innings against Lake Superior State for their second victory of the young season. Freshman Sabrina Maicke hit her first home run at the collegiate level in the bottom of the sixth to tie things at three heading into the final inning. In the top of the frame, Lakers' second baseman Amanda Maxon hit an RBI single to go back up one run. After a Kylie Clark foul out and a Rachel DeJongh flyout to center field, Katie Landon stepped up to the plate for the Eagles. She singled to keep the Eagles' hopes alive and brought Diesch up to the plate. Diesch, who was hitless in her three at-bats entering the inning but had a sac fly in the bottom of the first, smacked the long ball over the center field fence.

The bomb was Diesch's second of the season, as the Neenah, Wis., native went deep Saturday against Simpson College. DeJongh improved to 2-0 with the win after surrendering four earned runs on eight hits. She struck out seven batters and now has an ERA of 2.50 on the season. Riley Durbano was tagged with the loss for the Lakers after allowed five runs—all earned—on nine hits in 6.2 innings of work. She struck out three and walked one. Clark, DeJongh, Landon and Maicke led the Eagles in the game with two hits apiece.

The Eagles had trouble against UW-Superior starting pitcher Sarah Hendrickson and couldn't push any runs across the plate in the tournament finale. The Yellowjackets got on the board in the top of the second by scoring three runs off Eagles' starting pitcher Karlie Klossner. Klossner, a native of Monticello, Wis., cruised through the next two innings but was replaced by Shannon Whitmus. The Yellowjackets then scored three in the fifth and four more in the sixth to get to the 10-run limit.

Hendrickson scattered four hits and struck out two for the Yellowjackets in the win, while Klossner dropped to 0-2 on the year. Clark was 2-for-3 to lead the Eagles while Alyssa Schulting and Maicke were the only other Eagles to register a hit. Kristen Haider led the Yellowjackets by going 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Next up for the Eagles will be the Tucson Invitational Games in Tucson, Ariz. The Eagles will depart on Wednesday, March 11 and will begin the tournament with Alfred University on March 13 at Lincoln Regional Park. The Eagles will play nine more games between then and March 17 and Edgewood College will provide live stats for all games at the tournament.
