Eagles can't find a win during Day 1 of Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Edgewood College softball team lost to an 8-2 Alfred University team in their opening game of the 2015 Tucson Invitational and then couldn't come out on top in the nightcap against Baldwin-Wallace in what was a pitcher's duel for the first five innings. The Eagles fell 8-0 to Alfred before dropping to 0-2 in the tournament with a 7-0 loss to the Yellowjackets.

Katie Landon was hit by a pitch in the top of the first against Alfred and Sabrina Maicke drew a walk in the top of the third, but those two players would be the lone Eagles players to reach base against the Saxons' Alison Wickwire. Wickwire, a senior from Towanda, Penn., threw six hitless innings while fanning 10 and walking just one. The Saxons got on the board in the bottom of the first thanks to RBI doubles from Wickwire and shortstop Nicole Maher.

Eagles starting pitcher Rachel DeJongh was solid for the next three innings but ran into trouble in the fifth. An error allowed the Saxons' first run of the inning to cross the plate before rightfielder Hannah Lawrence went deep down the left field line with two runners on to make it 7-0. Second baseman Dana Torchia then sealed the victory with an RBI single to left field in the bottom of the sixth. DeJongh allowed eight runs, six earned, over five innings of work and struck out one.

Karlie Klossner kept the Yellowjackets off-balance for the first four innings later in the afternoon and dueled with Baldwin-Wallace's Erica Morgan in the circle. Klossner allowed just three hits in the first five innings before the Yellowjackets put together a rally in the top of the sixth. Tori Young highlighted the frame with a single up the middle that scored two before Klossner was pulled for freshman Shannon Whitmus. Whitmus recorded outs on the first two batters she faced in the inning to get out of the jam.

The Yellowjackets came right back in the seventh after Whitmus allowed a leadoff walk and a single to the next batter. After a lineout to third baseman Sabrina Maicke, Whitmus allowed another walk to load the bases. After a fielder's choice and an error, Young cleared the bases with a double to the left-center gap that scored three more. All three runs that Young drove in were unearned.

The Eagles threatened in the bottom of the fifth and had runners on second and third before Morgan recorded two strikeouts to end the inning. Kylie Clark and Alyssa Schulting had the lone hits for the Eagles in the effort.

Edgewood College will get back into action Saturday morning against Loras College and No. 16 Central College. The game against Loras is slated for a 11 pm (CT) start time while the game against Central is scheduled to begin at 1 pm.
