Eagles hang on for 1st win of season

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – An 8-2 run that gave the Eagles a 74-68 lead with 3:48 left was the difference maker on Wednesday night at Igini Sports Forum, giving the Eagles their first victory of the 2015-16 season. Adam Freitag poured in a career high 23 points to lead four Eagles in double figures.

Freshman forward Tyler Lemke, who finished second on the team with 17 points, converted on an and-one with 6:12 left in the game to go up 66-64 and the Eagles would go on the key 8-2 run shortly thereafter.

Dominican's Derek Steck responded with a layup on the other end to tie it at 66, but an Emilio Lopez jumper and back-to-back three-pointers from Tyler Westrick and Freitag put the Eagles up 74-68 with just 3:48 to go while forcing a Stars timeout.

The Stars would pull within one point on two occasions following the timeout but all the home team could manage after that point was a Josh Mayberry three-pointer to make it 82-78 with just 18 seconds left.

The game marked a drastic improvement in shooting for the young Eagles team, as their 49.0 percent (24-of-49) was the first time they had shot over 39 percent this season. It was also the second-straight game with at least 10 three-pointers and their 44.0 percent (12-of-27) from beyond the arc was their highest percentage from downtown on the season as well.

The Eagles had 41 bench points and were clutch from the charity stripe, making 24-of-34 (70.6 %).

Freitag's 23 points were five more than his previous career high from earlier this year while Lemke's 17 points and Westrick's 14 were both career highs as well. Emilio Lopez was the final Eagles player in double figures with 11. Lopez also led the team in boards with eight.

For the opposition, Josh Mayberry dropped 32 points and was 5-of-5 from beyond the arc with six rebounds.

The Eagles will get right back into action on Saturday, Dec. 12 with a matchup against nationally-ranked Benedictine University. Edgewood College will welcome No. 10 Benedictine for a 2 pm from the Edgedome.
