MADISON, Wis. – The 10th-ranked Benedictine University Eagles showed Edgewood College why they were worthy of a national ranking early on, but the home team managed to put together a few scoring spurts in the second half to make things interesting Saturday afternoon at the Edgedome. Ultimately, Edgewood College fell 77-57 to drop to 1-6 overall and 1-4 in the NACC.
Benedictine wasted no time in getting out to a big early lead, as the visiting Eagles were up 19-2 with 12:47 left in the half. It wasn't until Trevon Ampe converted on a jumper in the paint with 11:24 left in the half that the Eagles would stop the 12-0 Benedictine run. Sy Staver nailed a deep ball on the next possession to make it 21-7 but the Eagles would never make it closer than 16 before the break.
Benedictine led 38-20 at the break and 24 of its points came in the paint. Edgewood College was hampered by nine turnovers and shot 37.1 percent in the half.
Benedictine ran out to their largest lead of the game at 27 points when Lucas Johnson hit a three-pointer with 17:42 remaining to go up 49-22. From there, Edgewood College hovered around a 20-point deficit but managed to get as close as 17 with 5:37 left thanks to Adam Freitag's jumper in the paint.
Simon Breunig would nail his second three-pointer of the game two possessions later to make it 70-52 with 3:22 left. From there, Ampe hit a jumper in the paint with just under two minutes left and McClain Steffens hit the first three-pointer of his collegiate career with nine seconds left to close out the scoring in the game.
Freitag led Edgewood College with 14 points while Ampe finished with nine points and a career high 10 rebounds. Dylan Heemstra finished third on the team with seven points.
Benedictine was paced by Johnson, who finished with 16 points and hauled in 20 rebounds.
Edgewood College is off until Saturday, Dec. 19 when they square off against Concordia Chicago at home. Game time is set for 2 pm from the Edgedome.
