RIVER FOREST, Ill. - Everything came together for the Edgewood College basketball team Saturday afternoon at Concordia Chicago. They ran out to a big lead after the first quarter but then showed they were capable of playing behind as they pulled out a 59-56 win for their first conference victory of the season. The Eagles ended the game on a 16-4 run to close out the nail-biting win.
The Eagles led 19-7 after the first period but had some work to do after being outscored 39-21 over the next two periods. The Eagles would trail by as many as nine points with 7:12 left in the fourth quarter before buckling down defensively and hitting some clutch shots.
After CUC's Morgan Jahnke hit a jumper to go up 52-43, Zoey Dougherty hit two free throws on the next possession and Sierra Jiran would go 2-for-2 from the line two possessions later to make it 52-47 with 5:55 left.
Marissa Hoyer and Jiran jumpers and two Sydney Smith free throws tied things up at 52 with 4:31 remaining. The two teams would trade free throws before Rachel Pope converted on a layup to go up 57-54 with 1:04 left. CUC's Angelik Young hit two free throws moments later to pull within one at 57-56.
The Eagles defense would then take over, forcing two CUC turnovers on its next two possessions. The Eagles hit 1-of-2 free throws on each of their next two trips down, including Jiran's make with seven seconds left to go up 59-56. The Cougars then marched down and Jahnke would hoist a three pointer in the closing seconds but was off the mark.
The Eagles forced nine CUC turnovers in the fourth quarter alone and 22 for the game. They also forced the Cougars to just a 27.9 percent showing from the field.
Pope led all scorers with 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting, including a 3-of-7 mark from downtown. Jiran finished with a career high 17 points and also had 14 rebounds. Dougherty chipped in with eight points while Allison Gordon hauled in seven boards.
The Eagles will get back into action on Tuesday, Dec. 8 for a 7 pm game at MSOE. The game will be played at the Kern Center in Milwaukee, Wis.
